Water Vocab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Adhesion | When water molecules stick to other materials. |
| Cohesion | When water molecules stick to each other. |
| Polar molecule | A compound with one negatively charged side and one positively charged side. |
| Hydrogen bond | When the hydrogen(positive charge) side of a water molecule attracts the oxygen(negative charge) side of another water molecule. |
| Surface tension | Water has high surface tension. Water has a thin skin on it's surface due to the water molecules sticking together. |
| Capillary action | When cohesion and adhesion work together to allow water to travel against gravity and move up a plant stem. |
| Specific heat capacity | Water has a high specific heat capacity. This is the temperature it takes to change the temperature of a substance. (Water can absorb a lot of heat before it gets hot.) |
| Expansion upon freezing | As water gets colder, the molecules begin to move away from eachother. This means an increase in volume with the same mass leads to a decrease in density. |
| Universal solvent | Water is called a universal solvent because it dissolves more substances than any other liquid. |
