Earth's Movement in Space

TermDefinition
axis An imaginary line that passes through Earth's center and the North and South poles, about which Earth rotates
rotation The spinning motion of a planet on its axis
revolution The movement of an object around another object
orbit The path of an object as it revolves around another object in space
solstice Either of the two times of the year when the sun is at its greatest distance from the equator
equinox The two days of the year on which neither hemisphere is tilted toward or away from the sun
gravity A force of attraction between objects that is due to their masses.
law of universal gravitation the scientific law that states that every object in the universe attracts every other object
inertia The tendency of an object to resist a change in motion
hypothesize to develop an evidence-based idea that can be tested by experimentation or investigation
hemisphere one half of the earth
direct sunlight Sunlight that is highly concentrated or focused
indirect sunlight Sunlight that has low concentration or is spread across a large area
equator an imaginary line drawn around the earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres
ellipse A elongated circle, or oval shape, the shape of the planets orbit.
axial tilt the angle at which a planet tilts, Earth is at 23.5°
