Natural Resources

| Natural Resource | materials found in nature that are used by living things |
| Nonrenewable Resource | Something produced in nature more slowly than it is used by humans |
| Fossil Fuels | Coal, oil, natural gas, and other fuels that are ancient remains of plants and animals. |
| synthetic material | any product that exists that is artificial or man-made |
| Nuclear Fission | A nuclear reaction in which a massive nucleus splits into smaller nuclei which releases energy |
| Renewable Resource | A natural resource that can be replaced at the same rate at which the resource is consumed |
| inexhaustible resource | energy source that can't be used up by humans |
| Solar Power | energy from the sun that is converted into thermal or electrical energy |
| Wind Power | power obtained by harnessing the energy of the wind. |
| Hydroelectric Power | Electricity generated by flowing water |
| turbine | A machine for producing power in which a wheel or rotor is made to revolve by a fast-moving flow of water, steam, gas, or air. |
| Geothermal | Energy derived from the heat in the interior of the earth |
| Bioenergy Resources (biomass) | Wood, grasses, or plant-based materials used as a fuel (usually burned) |
| ore | a rock that contains a large enough concentration of a mineral making it profitable to mine |
| Coal | A fossil fuel that forms underground from partially decomposed plant material |
| Petroleum (oil) | A Fossil Fuel that originally came from ancient sea life |
| Natural Gas | A gas with high methane content, found along with various fossil fuels and is used as a fuel. |
| Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) | The pumping of water at high pressure to break apart shale rock in order to release natural gas |
| Nuclear Energy | The potential energy stored in the nucleus of an atom |
| mineral | a naturally occurring, inorganic solid that has a crystal structure and a definite chemical composition |
| desalination | A process of removing salt from ocean water |
