Basic Word Structure

QuestionAnswer
What is the "Root"? Gives the essential "meaning" of the term.
What is the "Suffix"? Is the word "ending".
What is the "Prefix"? Is a small part added to the "beginning" of a term.
What is the "Combining Vowel"? "Connects" roots to suffixes and roots to other roots.
What is the "Combining Form?" Is the combination of the "root" and the "combining vowel".
What part of the term do you read first? The suffix.
What part of the term do you read second? The root(s).
When do you drop the combining vowel? If the combining vowel comes before a suffix that starts with a vowel. (-ic, -ac, -itis)
When do you keep the combining vowel? If the combining vowel is between word roots (even if the second root begins with a vowel).
What does the root "aden" mean? gland
What does the root "arthr" mean? joint
What does the root "bi" mean? life
What does the root "carcin" mean? cancer, cancerous
What does the root "cardi" mean? heart
What does the root "cephal" mean? head
What does the root "cerebr" mean? cerebrum, largest part of the brain
What does the suffix "-oma" mean? tumor or mass
What does the suffix "-itis" mean? inflammation
What does the suffix "-logy" mean? study of
What does the suffix "-opsy" mean? (process of) viewing. Living tissue is removed and viewed under a microscope.
What does the suffix "-ic" mean? pertaining to
What does the suffix "-al" mean? pertaining to
What does the root "cyst" mean? urinary bladder
What does "cystoscope" mean? instrument to visually examine the urinary bladder.
What does the root "cyt" mean? cell
What does the root "derm" mean? skin
What does the room "dermat" mean? skin
What does the root "electr" mean? electricity
What does "cytology" mean? The study of cells.
What does the root "encephal" mean? brain
What does "electroencephalogram" mean? Record used to measure electricity in the brain. (to determine seizure disorder or epilepsy)
What does the root "entero' mean? intestines (often the small intestines)
What does "enteritis" mean? inflammation of the small intestine
What does the root "col" and "colon" mean? the large intestine (colon)
What does the root "erythr" mean? red
What does "erythrocyte" mean? red blood cell
What does the suffix "cyte" mean? cell
What blood cells carry oxygen? Erythrocytes
What blood cells (5 types in general) help fight disease? Leukocytes
What 2 blood cells (things) help blood to clot? Thrombocytes and platelets
What does the root "gastr" mean? stomach
What does "gastroscopy" mean? The visual process of viewing the stomach
