Scientific Method
| Term | Definition |

| Observation | the act of noticing, watching, or perceiving |
| Inference | an assumption with some degree of probability |
| Hypothesis | an educated guess or prediction presented as a possible explanation to an occurrence (if, then, because) |
| Inquiry | seeking or requesting information, knowledge, or truth |
| Data | individual facts, statistics, or items of information |
| Qualitative | concerned with distinctive properties, characteristics, or attributes |
| Quantitative | measuring of an amount of something |
| Descriptive investigation | describing and/or quantifying parts of a system |
| Comparative investigation | collecting data under different conditions to make a comparison |
| Experimental investigation | a designed test where variables are purposefully manipulated, controlled, and measured to prove or disprove a hypothesis |
| Control | a parallel experiment to nullify the hypothesis or establish a baseline for comparison |
| Control | the variables which are constant and unchanging |
| Independent variable | that which is intentionally changed to observe the effect on the dependent variable; manipulated |
| Dependent variable | that which is affected when the independent variable is changed; responding |
| Trials | each time the experimental investigation is run through from the beginning |
| Peer Review | a process of having the results of an investigation reworked to substantiate or disprove them by other scientists |
| Theory | thoroughly peer reviewed results regarded as correct |
| Law | a theory which has not been disproven over a very long period of time |
