Properties of Water
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cohesion | The sticking together of particles of the same substance. Water molecules sticking to other water molecules. |
| Adhesion | An attraction between molecules of different substances. Water molecules sticking to other molecules. |
| Capillary Action | The ability of a liquid to flow against gravity. |
| Polar Molecule | A molecule that has electrically charged areas (a positive end and a negative end) |
| Water's Chemical Makeup | H2O Made of two positively charged Hydrogen molecules and one nagatively charged Oxygen molecule |
| High Specific Heat | Water can absorb lots of heat before changing temperature |
| Surface Tension | A top "skin-like" layer of water molecules created due to water's cohesive property |
| Universal Solvent | Water is called this due to its ability to dissolve many polar substances |
| Uniqueness of Water's Density | Solid water (ice) is less dense than liquid water and therefore floats |
| Evaporation | The change of a substance from a liquid to a gas |
| Condensation | The change of state from a gas to a liquid. How clouds are formed in the water cycle. |
| Precipitation | Any form of water that falls from clouds and reaches Earth's surface. |
