Chemistry

TermDefinition
Physical Change A change in size, shape, state, or appearance that does not form a new substance.
Chemical Change A change in matter in which one or more new substances form.
Chemical Reaction A process in which substances interact and atoms rearrange to form new substances.
Reactant A starting substance in a chemical reaction.
Product A new substance formed during a chemical reaction.
Evidence Observations or measurements used to support an explanation.
Conservation of Matter The principle that matter is not created or destroyed during a physical or chemical change.
Mixture Two or more substances physically combined while each keeps its own properties.
Solution A mixture in which one substance is evenly distributed throughout another.
Solute The substance that dissolves in a solution.
Solvent The substance that does the dissolving.
Aqueous Solution A solution in which water is the solvent.
Solubility The amount of a substance that can dissolve in a certain amount of solvent under specific conditions.
Concentration How much solute is present in a certain amount of solution.
Saturated Solution A solution containing as much dissolved solute as it can hold under the given conditions.
Dissolution Rate How quickly a solute dissolves in a solvent.
Agitation Stirring or shaking that can increase how quickly a solute dissolves.
Surface Area The amount of a substance exposed to its surroundings; greater surface area can increase dissolution rate.
