| theory | A theory is a well-tested and reasoned set of principles that explains a group of facts or natural events. |
| law | A scientific law is a short statement or mathematical formula that describes a consistent, observable pattern in nature. |
| experiment | An experiment is a test or procedure done to learn something, check if a guess is true, or see how a cause-and-effect relationship works. |
| hypothesis | A hypothesis is a testable prediction or explanation for an observed research question. |
| dependent variable | A dependent variable is the outcome that you measure and test in an experiment. |
| observation | An observation is the act of carefully watching, noticing, or gathering information using the senses. |
| independent variable | An independent variable is the variable that a person changes, controls, or manipulates in an experiment to test its effects on another factor. |
| data | Data is a collection of facts, figures, numbers, or symbols that are beinging processed or given context. |
| model | A scientific model is a simplified physical, conceptual, or mathematical representation of a real-world system, object, or phenomenon that is difficult to observe directly. |
| engineering | Engineering is the use of scientific and mathematical knowledge to solve practical problems. |
| technology | Technology includes the use of tools, materials, or processes to meet human needs |
| Prototype | A prototype is an early, working model or test version of a new product, system, or invention used to evaluate how well an idea works in the real world. |
| trade-off | A trade-off means accepting risks in exchange for benefits or giving up one benefit to gain another. |
| life cycle analysis | A life cycle analysis is an evaluation of the materials and energy used for the manufacture, transportation, sale, use, and disposal of a product. |
| pugh chart | A Pugh chart is a table used to compare the features of multiple items. Each row of the table shows a different product or solution. |
| risk-benefit analysis | A risk-benefit analysis compares the risks, or unfavorable effects, to the benefits, or favorable effects, of a decision or technology. |
