| Wellness | A state of overall physical, mental, and emotional health that allows a person to function effectively and cope with everyday stress. |
| Resilience | The ability to adapt to, recover from, and continue functioning after stressful, difficult, or traumatic situations. |
| Fatigue | Physical or mental exhaustion that can result from inadequate rest, long work hours, stress, or demanding activity. |
| Burnout | A state of physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion caused by prolonged or repeated stress, often related to work. |
| Compassion Fatigue | Emotional and physical exhaustion that can develop from repeatedly caring for people who are suffering, injured, or experiencing trauma. |
| PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) | A mental health condition that may develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event and can involve intrusive memories, avoidance, negative changes in mood or thinking, and heightened reactions. |
| Standard Precautions | Infection-control practices used with every patient to reduce the risk of exposure to blood, body fluids, and potentially infectious materials. |
| PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) | Protective equipment worn to reduce exposure to hazards or infectious materials, such as gloves, gowns, masks, respirators, and eye protection. |
| Bloodborne Pathogens | Disease-causing microorganisms that are carried in blood and certain body fluids and can infect humans, such as HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. |
| Airborne Pathogens | Disease-causing microorganisms that can remain suspended in the air and be transmitted when inhaled. |
| Communicable Disease | A disease that can be transmitted from one person to another, either directly or indirectly. |
| Infectious Disease | An illness caused by microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites that enter and multiply within the body. |
| Exposure | Contact with blood, body fluids, airborne particles, or other potentially infectious materials that creates a possibility of disease transmission. |
| Immunity | The body's ability to resist or fight infection through natural defenses, previous infection, or vaccination. |
| Scene Safety | The process of identifying and controlling potential hazards before entering and while working at an emergency scene to protect EMS personnel, patients, and bystanders. |
| Diversity | The presence and recognition of differences among people, including differences in culture, background, experiences, abilities, beliefs, and perspectives. |
| Inclusion | Creating an environment in which individuals of different backgrounds and characteristics are respected, valued, supported, and able to participate fully. |
