Dependent Variable A factor in an investigation that is measured or observed
Descriptive Investigation A type of investigation focused on observing
Evidence Information that supports or refutes a claim
Experimental Investigation A type of investigation that involves collecting and analyzing data on different groups
Fair Test An investigation where only one variable changes and all other factors are controlled
Hypothesis A testable idea or explanation that can be used to design an investigation
Independent Variable A factor in an investigation that is changed
Inference An explanation based on prior knowledge
Model A representation of an object
Observation Information that is collected with the senses
Pattern A recognizable similarity or relationship in the qualities
Phenomenon An observable event
Precision The exactness of a measurement
Prediction An expectation that shows a cause-and-effect relationship that may occur under specific conditions
Problem A question raised for inquiry
Prototype A model used for testing
Qualitative Data Data that refers to the quality of something
Quantitative Data Data that refers to a quantity or number of something
Reliability The ability of an investigation to be repeatable and accurate
Scientific Law A statement that describes what you can expect to occur every time under a particular set of conditions
Scientific Method A set of steps that guides scientists as they ask questions and investigate phenomena
Scientific Theory A well-tested explanation for a wide range of observations or experimental results; It provides details and describes causes of observed patterns.
Scientist A person who tries to understand how our world works through observation and investigation
