6th,7th & 8th Matter & Energy STAAR Vocabulary

TermDefinition
atom the smallest particle of matter that has distinct physical and chemical properties; consists of a nucleus which contains protons and neutrons and an electron cloud which contains electrons
element a pure substance that is made up of one type of atom
matter substance that occupies space, has mass, and is composed of microscopic particles
physical property observable characteristic of matter that can be used to identify particular materials
density a physical property that measures how tightly packed the particles of a substance are compared to the volume of the substance; the relationship between mass and volume
property characteristic of matter that can be used to identify particular materials
substance a particular kind of matter with uniform properties; can be seen, touched, and/or measured
evidence data that supports a hypothesis or an argument and is observable through the senses or technology
precipitate an insoluble solid substance that is formed during a chemical change and occurs after mixing liquids
chemical formula the unique combination of chemical symbols and subscripts that describe which and how many of each element are bonded together in a compound
compound a pure substance that is made up of two or more different elements in a specific ratio
periodic table an organizational chart of all the known elements on Earth, organized based on the physical and chemical properties of each
solution a substance in which a solid, liquid, or gaseous substance is evenly distributed (or dissolved) within a liquid or sometimes a gas or solid
chemical change a type of change in which a new substance is made from one or more previous substances; occurs during a chemical reaction; a change where the atoms of the original substances are rearranged to make new elements and/or compounds
chemical equation describes a chemical reaction and includes all of the reactants and all of the products of the reaction
chemical reaction a chemical change that occurs when two or more substances combine to form a new substance; the rearrangement of atoms to produce new compounds
closed system a physical system that does not allow transfer of matter in or out, although energy can flow into and out of the system
law of conservation of mass in chemical changes, the total mass of the materials does not change (nor does the type and number of atoms); the total mass of the reactants is equal to the total mass of the products
mass the amount of matter in a substance, measured in grams or kilograms
photosynthesis the chemical process by which plants and other photosynthetic organisms produce their own source of energy (food) using energy from sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and glucose (food)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
