What are the responsibilities of an EMR worker? Provide care before the ambulance arrives and are trained in BLS
What are the responsibilities of an EMT? BLS plus AED operation, airway adjuncts, and assisting patients w/ certain meds
What are the responsibilities of an AEMT? Specific training in ALS (advanced life support) including IV therapy and administration of some medications
What are the responsibilities of a Paramedic? Extensive ALS training including intubation, emergency medications, cardiac monitoring, and many advanced assessment & treatment skills
What did the ADA accomplish for EMTs? Protects EMTs with disabilities who are seeking employment and may include modifications to the work environment or how the job is performed for said employees
What historical events for EMS occurred in the 1960s? 1966 - Accidental Death and Disability: The Neglected Disease of Modern Society/The White Paper was published --> highlighted need for improved EMS & public awareness of accidental injuries 1967 - Freedom House Ambulance service is instated
What historical event took place in the 1970s that involved EMS? Early 1970s - DOT published the first EMT training curriculum/"Orange Book"
What is the National EMS Scope of Practice Model? Dictates "what" EMS providers can do, assigning minimum competencies & allowed skills
What do state guidelines do for EMS? Regulation of EMS operations; "How" EMS providers can perform their duties in the given state
What role does Medical Direction play in regulating/defining EMS care? Clinical oversight that defines "how" AND "when" EMS providers should perform care
What is the star of life symbol and what is its meaning? 6-pointed star for 6 fxns of EMS: Detection, Reporting, Response, On-scene Care, Care in Transit, Transfer to Definitive Care
What is medical direction? What's the difference between off-line and online medical control? A medical director (if physician, will authorize EMTs to provide med care in field) acts as a liaison and is job specific for authorizing EMTs to provide medical care. Online = directions via phone/radio, offline = standing orders, training, supervision
What is Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI)? Reviews & performs audits of EMS systems to identify areas of improvement and/or assign remedial training
What is the function of QA/QI for agencies? QA/QI review charts & ensure all providers are giving appropriate and quality care
