gas a state of matter, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide in the air
producer a living thing that makes its own food
seed a part of a plant that can grow into a baby plant
soil found on the Earth's surface; made of tiny rocks and material from dead plants and animals
states of matter the different forms of matter that includes solid, liquid, and gas
stomata the tiny openings on plant leaves that take in air
bacteria very tiny organisms that you need a microscope to see; they are often decomposers
compost decomposed material that can be used as fertilizer
decompose the process of breaking down dead plants, dead animals, or animal waste
decomposer a living thing that can break down dead plants, dead animals, or animal waste
environment a living thing's surroundings, including other living things and non-living things like soil, water, and air
fungus (fungi) a living thing that is a decomposer, such as a mold or mushroom
mold a type of fungus that often decomposes food
mushroom a type of fungus that usually has a stalk and cap
organism any living thing
algae organisms that live in water and that produce their own food, like plants do
atmosphere the gases that surround a planet
bacteria an organism that is usually a decomposer; some cause illness
carbon cycle the process of carbon moving back and forth between non-living and living parts of the environment, like carbon dioxide in the air moving into plants

asteroid a small, rocky object in outer space

extinct when a type of living thing no longer exists
fossil the remains of a plant or animal that lived a very, very long time ago
