Antibiotics (Cefazolin) Purpose: Prevent surgical site infections
Benziodiazepines: midazolam(versed), diazepam(Valium), and lorazepam(ativan) Purpose: Decrease anxiety and produce sedation, induce amnesia, may induce substancial amnesia.
Opioids (Morphine, Fentanyl, Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Tramadol, Codeine Purpose: Decrease anxiety, provide analgesia, allow reduced anesthetic dose.
H2 Receptor Antagonists: Tagamet, Pepsid, and Zantac Purpose: Reduce gastric acid and volume concentration.
Proton Pump Inhibitors Prevacid, Inapsine Purpose: Supress gastric acid secretion
Antiemetics Reglan, Inapsine Purpose: Enhance gastric emptying, traquilizer, prevent n/v preoperatively.
Anticholinergics Atropine sulfate, Robinul Purpose: Reduce oral and respiratory secretions to decrease risk of aspiration; decrease risk of vomitting and laryngospasm, block vagal response.
Anticholingeric symptoms of surgery Dry mouth, confusion, tachycardia, restlessness.
Diagnostic Test CBC (h&h, wbc with diff, platelet.), potassium, chloride, sodium, pt/ptt, urinalysis, ekg, cxr, ecg.
