Final Exam Vocab. P2

Biology Final Exam Vocabulary Part 2

TermDefinition
Biosphere Where all life on Earth exists
Keystone Species a species that is vital to the survival and health of an environment, helps create an ecosystem.
Food Web multiple connected food chains in an ecosystem
Primary Succession The creation of a new ecosystem where one has never existed before. Begins with species likes lichens and mosses, which create soil/dirt
Decomposer An organism that breaks down dead or dying organisms to return their nutrients back into the ecosystem.
Invasive Species A species that is not native to the area in which it is living. This can seriously damage the ecosystem.
Population All of the organisms of the same species in a particular ecosystem.
Energy Pyramid A triangular diagram illustrating that the amount of energy at each level of a food chain decreases.
Ecosystem The number of different species in a particular ecosystem.
Pioneer Species The first species to grow and live in an new environment, like lichens and mosses, which help to create soil/dirt where there wasn't any before
Competition The relationship between organisms in the same ecosystem fighting or competing for limited resources, such as food, water, space, or mates.
Natural Selection organisms with beneficial traits survive and reproduce to pass on the beneficial trait to future offspring
Adaptation A characteristic that allows an organism to survive in its environment, such as camouflage, having sharp teeth, or being able to run fast.
Community All of the differing populations of organisms living together in one ecosystem.
Biodiversity the variety of species in an ecosystem
Abiotic Factor The non-living factors in an ecosystem, such as sunlight, oxygen/air, temperature, precipitation, rocks/soil.
Biotic Factor All the living factors in an ecosystem, such as plants, animals, fungi and bacteria.
Logistic Growth Curve an s-shaped curved graph where the population growth rises until it meets its carrying capacity, at which point it stabilizes or becomes constant
Exponential Growth Curve a j-shaped graph where the population growth rises without stopping, this is a result of unlimited resources
Density Independent Limiting Factor factors that limit a population's growth that DO NOT depend on the population size, typically abiotic factors like, fires, floods, tornados, or human activity
Density Dependent Limiting Factor limiting factors affected by population size, such as food or space
Food Chain diagram showing the flow of energy between organisms
Geographic Isolation separation of populations by physical barriers like mountains or rivers
Secondary Succession rebuilding of an ecosystem after a disturbance like fire or logging

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
