Anatomy BRAIN QUIZ

Ch. 8 Quiz

QuestionAnswer
neuron individual cells of the nervous system that conduct impulses
nerves a bundle of neurons; take impulses to and from the spinal cord
dendrites branch-like structures of the neuron that receive information and starts sending the impulse down the cell
axon long part of the neuron that conducts impulses to glands or muscles
nerve impulse the electrical signal sent along a neuron
motor neuron type of cell that conducts impulses to muscles or glands
sensory neuron type of cell that conducts impulses from the eyes, ears, nose, skin, and tongue to the CNS
neurotransmitter chemical that transmits nerve impulses across a synapse
synapse where neurons meet each other but do not touch; chemicals travel across this space to allow the signal to be passed on
interneuron type of cell that conducts impulses between sensory and motor neurons
brainstem has vital centers for regulating heartbeat, breathing, and blood pressure; keeps one alive even with no electrical activity in the cerebrum
hypothalamus unites the nervous and endocrine systems because it controls the pituitary gland
occipital lobe part of the cerebrum that is responsible for vision
autonomic nervous system division of the peripheral nervous system responsible for the functioning of internal organs (involuntary functions)
cerebrum largest, most superior part of the brain responsible for consciousness; each lobe has numerous functions
central nervous system division of nervous system including the brain and spinal cord
somatic nervous system division of peripheral nervous system responsible for all voluntary movements (skeletal muscles_
cerebellum responsible for balance and coordination; in the posterior and inferior region of the brain
sympathetic division responsible for the fight or flight response, a division of the autonomic nervous system
frontal lobe part of the cerebrum responsible for higher level thinking skills, concentration, planning, and reasoning
parasympathetic division division of the autonomic nervous system that controls the "rest and digest" functions activated when the person is not under threat and promotes a relaxed state
thalamus acts as a relay center to receive impulses and direct them to the correct area of the cerebrum for interpretation
temporal lobe part of the cerebrum responsible for auditory processing, hearing, and verbal language
parietal lobe part of the cerebrum responsible for sensing touch and temperature and knowledge of limb positions
pituitary gland not part of the nervous system but receives impulses from the hypothalamus so it can regulate the entire endocrine system

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
