QuestionAnswer
What is SCIENCE? A philosophy that let's us ask questions about cause and effect in the natural world
The proper term for "Scientific Method" is? Hypotheticodeductive Method
What are the 5 steps to the Hypotheticodeductive Method? 1. OBSERVATION (Anything that can be detected by our senses) 2. QUESTION (Start asking questions) 3. HYPOTHESIS (Self educated guess) 4. TEST (Experiment) 5. CONCLUDE (Accept or reject the hypothesis)
What is a Hypothesis? An informed question about a cause/effect relationship that MUST be falsifiable and general is broken down into an "if....then..." statement.
What is a Theory? A Theory is a hypothesis that has been tested multiple times and has always been supported.
Is 'gravity' a theory or a Law? Why? Gravity is a theory because the mechanism is unknown.
What is a Law? A Law is a theory that has been shown to be UNIVERSALLY true.
What 3 things must be present to be considered Natural Selection? 1. A Trait that varies 2. The trait is heritable 3. One version of that trait must be advantagous for survival or reproduction
Natural Selection is the __________ of Evolution? Mechanism
What was Darwin's greatest contribution to biology? Natural Selection (It was the 1st falsifiable mechanism for the way evolution works.)
Who went on the "Voyage of the Beagle"? Charles Darwin
What was the title and author of the ESSAY that Charles Darwin read which influenced his theories? Thomas Malthus's Essay on: Population Growth. (Food is a limited resource + populations tend to increase beyond the available food supply. Therefore organisms must compete for food.
What was the title and author of the BOOK that Charles Darwin read which influenced his theories? Lyell's Principles of Geology (Law's of physics + chemisty remained constant throughout history. Past events occured in the same ways they do today. Therefore, the age of the earth must be in the millions of years.
What are the 5 Darwinian Theories? 1. Perpetual Change 2. Common Descent 3. Multiplication of Species 4. Gradualism 5. Natural Selection
Describe Darwins Theory of Perpetual Change: The living world is NOT constant or cyclic (predictable/same), BUT the world is always changing.
Describe Darwins Theory of Common Descent: All living things, if you go far back in time, have a single, common ancestor.
Describe Darwins Theory of Multiplication of Species: New species arise from other species continually throughout time.
Describe Darwins Theory of Gradualism: Organisms continually acquire small PHENOTYAC changes that eventually lead to new species.
What does Phenotyac mean? The physical appearance of an organism. The physiology or behavior.
What is Sexual Selection? Sexual Selection is very similar to Natural Selection BUT the traits under selection MUST all have to do with attracting a mate and/or for reproduction.
The Theory of Natural Selection was proposed by? Charles Darwin
Hugo De Vries explained variations in terms of ______? Mutations
True or False: The Earth is approximately 10 billion years old. FALSE. The Earth is approximately 4.6 billion years old.
