Ecology
| Term | Definition |

| ecosystem | all the living organisms living in an area and the abiotic/non living factors they use to stay alive |
| population | 2 or more organisms of the same species |
| abiotic | NOT ALIVE...non-living parts of an ecosystem (examples include: soil, moisture, rock, oxygen, nutrients, sun, water) |
| biotic | ALIVE...living parts of an ecosystem (examples include: tree, bacteria, dog, human, mosquito) |
| niche | the role or job of an organism in the ecosystem (predator, prey, producer, etc.) |
| predator | an organism that eats/kills another organisms |
| prey | an organism that is eaten/killed by another organism |
| parasite | an organism that lives in/on another organism and damages it while using it to survive (lice, flea, tapeworm, etc.) |
| host | the organism that is being damaged by a parasite living in/on it |
| community | All of the living (biotic) organisms living in an area (does NOT include the non-living factors) |
| species | Organisms so similar that they can reproduce and create offspring |
| biosphere | All of the ecosystems that exist...EARTH. |
| Commensalism | one organism is benefited while the other is not affected at all |
| Autotroph/ Producer | Organism that makes its own food |
| Heterotroph/ Consumer | Organism that eats other animals for food |
| Mutualism | both organisms benefit from the association |
| Herbivore | Animal that only eats plants |
| Carnivore | Animal that only eats meat |
| Parasitism | one organism is benefited by living on/ in another and harming them |
| Decomposer | Organism that breaks down dead things to return nutrients to the soil |
| Predator/Prey | one organism is benefited while the other is eaten (killed) |
