Cell Organelles

Reviews the main organelles in both plant and animal cells

TermDefinition
organelle membrane surrounded component of a eukaryotic cell with a specialized function to maintain homeostasis
cell membrane a flexible covering that protects the inside of the cell from the environment outside of the cell. (PLANT and ANIMAL)
Cell wall a stiff structure outside of PLANT cells that protects the cell from attack by viruses and other harmful organisms.
cytoplasm liquid part of both PLANT and ANIMAL cells that gives the cell its shape that also contains salts and other molecules
nucleus part of the eukaryotic cells (PLANT and ANIMAL) that directs cell activity, stores DNA (genetic information), and directs reproduction
mitochondria an organelle in the cell (PLANT and ANIMAL) that breaks down the contents to give energy to the cell.
chloroplast an organelle (PLANT) that uses light energy and makes food (glucose) from water and carbon dioxide during photosynthesis
vacuoles organelles that store liquids for the cell PLANT-one large central vacuole ANIMAL-several small vacuoles throughout the cell
