What is a bomb cyclone? Rapidly intensifying cyclone
Pressure drop requirement for a bomb cyclone? 24 mb in 24 hours
What is a blizzard? Strong winds + snow + low visibility
Wind speed requirement for a blizzard? 35+ mph for 3+ hours
What is an ice storm? ≥ 1/4 inch ice buildup
How does lake-effect snow form? Cold dry air moves over warm lake
What happens to the air over the lake? Gains moisture + rises
What causes the snow? Air cools on land → precipitation
What is a thunderstorm? Storm with lightning, thunder, rain
What powers thunderstorms? Latent heat from condensation
When is a thunderstorm considered severe? Winds >58 mph, hail >1 inch, or tornado
What is vertical wind shear? Change in wind speed/direction with height
What 4 conditions are needed for severe thunderstorms? Instability, moisture, lift, wind shear
