Geologic Time Timeline for history of life on earth based on the age of rocks and fossils.
Eon The longest time period on geologic time line. It is further divided into eras.
Epoch The smallest division on the geologic time scale.
Era The divisions among eras reflect major changes in the fossil record including the extinction and appearance of new life form.
Paleontology The study of fossils
Fossils It is the preserved remain of a once living organisms.
Index Fossils A fossil that is useful for dating and correlating the data in which it is formed.
Rock strata a layer of sedimentary rocks that were formed at the Earth’s surface.
Superposition It states that top layers of rocks and fossils found in them are younger than layers that are on the bottom.
Absolute Age It determines the actual age of a rock or fossils in the year. The main method is radiometric dating.
Relative age It indicates that one layer is older or younger than another layer but does not indicate the age of the rock.
Relative Dating a technique used to date materials, usually rocks, on the basis of radioactive decay rates.
Half- life the half of the time taken for the radioactive element to decay into a new stable elements.
