| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Big Bang theory | the theoretical explanation for the origin and expansion of the universe |
| Cosmic microwave background (CMB) | faint radiation left over from the Big Bang |
| Doppler effect | the apparent change in frequency of a wave due to motion |
| Elliptical galaxy | a round or oval galaxy with little gas or dust |
| Galaxy | a system of stars, gas, and dust bound by gravity |
| Hertzsprung-Russell (H-R) diagram | a graph showing the relationship between a star’s luminosity and temperature |
| Irregular galaxy | a galaxy without a distinct shape |
| Light-year | the distance light travels in one year |
| Luminosity | the amount of energy a star gives off |
| Main sequence | stars in the main stage of their cycle, forms the the diagonal band on the H-R diagram |
| Milky Way | our home galaxy, a barred spiral galaxy |
| Nebula | a cloud of gas and dust where stars form |
| Nuclear fusion | the process by which stars produce energy in their core |
| Red Giant | A large, bright star in the late stages of its life, expanding and cooling after exhausting its hydrogen fuel. |
| Redshift | the stretching of light waves as objects in space move away |
| Spiral galaxy | a galaxy with curved arms and a dense center (like the Milky Way) |
| Star | a massive ball of hot gas that produces energy through nuclear fusion |
| Supernova | an enormous explosion that occurs when a massive star dies |
| Universe | all of space and everything in it |
| White dwarf | a small, hot, dense remnant of a star in its final stage |
