Seasons
| Term | Definition |

| revolution | when one object travels all the way around another object in a circular path |
| Rotation | an object spins around its own axis |
| axis | an imaginary line that an object spins around |
| Tilt | Earth’s axis is tilted at about 23.5°, and is one of the main reasons we have seasons. |
| equinox | happens twice a year when day and night are almost the same length everywhere on Earth; this happens because neither hemisphere is tilted toward or away from the Sun. |
| solstice | happens twice a year when Earth’s tilt causes either the longest day of the year or the shortest day of the year; happen because one hemisphere is tilted most toward or most away from the Sun. |
| solar eclipse | happens during the new moon phase, when the moon lines up perfectly between the Sun and Earth, causing the Moon to cast a shadow on Earth. |
| lunar eclipse | occurs when the Moon passes into Earth’s shadow; this can only happen during a full moon, when the Sun, Earth, and Moon line up in a straight line. |
| waning | when the lit part -left side- of the Moon is getting smaller each night, moving from a Full Moon toward a New Moon |
| waxing | when the lit part -right side- of the Moon is growing larger each night, moving from a New Moon toward a Full Moon |
| tides | regular rise and fall of ocean water levels caused mainly by the Moon’s gravity and partly by the Sun’s gravity |
