TermDefinition
crescent A curved, thin shape. When less than half the moon is illuminated.
gibbous When the moon is more than half illuminated, but not yet fully illuminated.
waning To decrease or decline in size.
waxing To increase or grow in brightness.
phase The change in the sunlit area of a celestial body as seen from another celestial body.
celestial body A naturally occuring, physical object located in outer space, beyond Earth's atmosphere.
rotation The circular movement of an object around a fixed axis.
revolution The orbital motion of one celestial body around another.
orbit The path that a body follows as it travels around another body in space.
eclipse An event in which the shadow of one celestial body falls on another
umbra A region of complete shadow result from total obstruction of light.
penumbra A lighter, outer part of a shadow where only some light is blocked.
lunar of or related to the moon.
solar Of or related to the sun.
equinox An occurrence where the position of the sun is exactly over the equator. (equal night)
solstice An occurrence where the position of the sun is farthest north and south from the equator.
season A division of the year that is characterized by recurring weather conditions, and determined by both Earth's tilt relative to the sun and Earth's position in its orbit around the sun.
