| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What does the nervous system enable us to do? | react to the world around you co-ordinate your behaviour |
| What are sense organs a collection of? | receptor cells |
| What do receptor cells detect? | stimuli (changes in the environment) |
| What are reflex actions? | fast and automatic reactions to external stimuli |
| What are neurons? | long thin cells that carry electrical impulses |
| What are synapses? | the gap between two neurons |
| What is homeostasis? | The maintenance of a stable, internal environment |
| Why is homeostasis important? | . ensures conditions stay constant . protects the body from harmful effects . chemical reactions only work within a narrow range of temp and PH |
| What are our sense organs? | ears, eyes, skin, nose, tongue |
| What does CNS stand for? | central nervous system |
| What two things make up our CNS? | Spinal cord and brain |
| What are the 3 types of neurones in our reflex arc? | sensory neurone, motor neurone and relay neurone |
| What does our sense organ, ears detect? | sound and balance |
| What is the name of the organ that produces insulin? | pancreas |
| What affect does insulin have on the liver? | causes glucose to convert to glycogen |
| What affect does insulin have on blood glucose? | blood glucose levels fall |
| What are hormones made from? | proteins |
| what is diabetes? | a common disease where someone has a high blood glucose level |
| How do people treat type 1 diabetes? | daily injections of insulin |
| What are the 3 things the body does when body temperature rises too high? | . Blood vessels wide, more blood flow, more heat lost . erector muscles relax, hairs lies flat, less air trapped so less insulation . sweat produced from the sweat pore, sweat evaporates using heat from the body, more heat is lost from the body |
| What are the 4 things the body does when temperatures drop too low? | . blood vessels constrict, less heat lost from blood flow . hairs stand up, erector muscles contract . less sweat produced, less heat loss from the body . shivering, rapid muscle contraction |
| define the term 'drug'? | a chemical that alters the way your body works |
| What is addiction? | you become physically and mentally dependent on something e.g. drugs or alcohol |
| What are examples of withdrawal symptoms? | headaches, shivering, pain |
| What is a stimulant? | a drug that speeds up the nervous system |
| What is a depressant? | a drug that slows down the nervous system? |
| What is a legal drug that can bought in shops by all ages? | caffeiene |
