What does the nervous system enable us to do? react to the world around you co-ordinate your behaviour
What are sense organs a collection of? receptor cells
What do receptor cells detect? stimuli (changes in the environment)
What are reflex actions? fast and automatic reactions to external stimuli
What are neurons? long thin cells that carry electrical impulses
What are synapses? the gap between two neurons
What is homeostasis? The maintenance of a stable, internal environment
Why is homeostasis important? . ensures conditions stay constant . protects the body from harmful effects . chemical reactions only work within a narrow range of temp and PH
What are our sense organs? ears, eyes, skin, nose, tongue
What does CNS stand for? central nervous system
What two things make up our CNS? Spinal cord and brain
What are the 3 types of neurones in our reflex arc? sensory neurone, motor neurone and relay neurone
What does our sense organ, ears detect? sound and balance
What is the name of the organ that produces insulin? pancreas
What affect does insulin have on the liver? causes glucose to convert to glycogen
What affect does insulin have on blood glucose? blood glucose levels fall
What are hormones made from? proteins
what is diabetes? a common disease where someone has a high blood glucose level
How do people treat type 1 diabetes? daily injections of insulin
What are the 3 things the body does when body temperature rises too high? . Blood vessels wide, more blood flow, more heat lost . erector muscles relax, hairs lies flat, less air trapped so less insulation . sweat produced from the sweat pore, sweat evaporates using heat from the body, more heat is lost from the body
What are the 4 things the body does when temperatures drop too low? . blood vessels constrict, less heat lost from blood flow . hairs stand up, erector muscles contract . less sweat produced, less heat loss from the body . shivering, rapid muscle contraction
define the term 'drug'? a chemical that alters the way your body works
What is addiction? you become physically and mentally dependent on something e.g. drugs or alcohol
What are examples of withdrawal symptoms? headaches, shivering, pain
What is a stimulant? a drug that speeds up the nervous system
What is a depressant? a drug that slows down the nervous system?
What is a legal drug that can bought in shops by all ages? caffeiene
