| Central idea | main idea/subject being presented in a text. |
| Theme | moral/life lesson taught in a text |
| Characterization | description of a character (appearance & personality) |
| Conflict | problem in the story |
| Setting | time and place of the story |
| Point of view | (1ST, 2ND, 3RD POV) perspective from which a story is told Point of view- *ON STATE TESTS* POV is often referring to an author’s position on the topic he is writing about |
| Authors purpose | why is the author writing this? To persuade, inform or entertain? |
| Structure | the organization of a text |
| Tone | the attitude of the author |
| Mood | the feeling that the readers get (vibe) |
| Imagery | descriptions with details (five senses: sight, sound, feel, taste, smell) |
| Foreshadowing | a hint at something to come in the story |
| Flashback | going back to an earlier time in the story |
| symbolism | when something represents a bigger, abstract idea |
