Plate Movement

TermDefinition
Crust Its a thin outer layer of the earth where we live.
Mantle The thick layer under the crust made of hot moving rocks.
Outer Core A layer of liquid metal beneath the mantle
Inner Core The solid very hot center of earth.
Latitude Lines that measure how far east or west a place is from the equator.
Longitude Lines that measure how far east or west a place from the Prime Meridian
Oceanic ridge An underwater mountain range where new crust forms.
Sea-floor spreading The process where new ocean crust forms and spreads outward.
Divergent boundary A place where tectonic plates move away from each other
convergent boundary A place where move towards each other
Transform boundary A place where plates slide past each other
Subduction When one plate goes under another plate into mantle.
Ocean trench A deep valley in the ocean floor where subduction happens.
Tectonic Plates A large piece of earth's crust that moves slowly.
Lithosphere The rigid outer layer earth made of crust and upper mantle .
Fracture A crack in a rock.
Elasticity The ability of something to bend and then return to its original shape.
Stress A force that pushes or pulls on rock.
Strain The change in shape of rock caused by stress.
Plate Boundary The edge where two tectonic plates meet.
Continental crust The thick crust that makes up.
Oceanic crust The thinner crust under the oceans.
Friction A force that slows down movement when a surface rubs together .
Rift Valley A long, deep valley formed when land pulls apart.
