Vocabulary - Unit 4:

TermDefinition
Rotation: The spinning motion of Earth around its own axis, which runs from the North Pole to the South Pole, completing one full spin in approximately 24 hours.
Day The 24-hour time period caused by Earth's rotation, determining the cycle of daylight and darkness.
Revolution The orbital movement of Earth around the Sun, tracing an elliptical path over the course of one year.
year The time it takes for Earth to complete one full revolution around the Sun, roughly 365.25 days.
season The four divisions of the year (spring, summer, fall, winter) caused by the tilt of Earth's axis (23.5°) combined with its revolution around the Sun, resulting in changing amounts of sunlight.
equinox : Occurs twice a year (around March 20/21 and September 22/23) when Earth's axis is tilted neither toward nor away from the Sun, causing day and night to be nearly equal in length everywhere on Earth.
solstice Occurs twice a year (around June 21/22 and December 21/22) when the Earth's tilt toward or away from the Sun is at its maximum.
satellite an artificial body placed in orbit around the earth or moon or another planet in order to collect information or for communication
gravity the force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass.
lunar phases Lunar phases are the different shapes of the Moon as seen from Earth, caused by the changing angles of the Earth, Moon, and Sun as the Moon orbits the Earth.
eclipse an obscuring of the light from one celestial body by the passage of another between it and the observer or between it and its source of illumination.
umbra the fully shaded inner region of a shadow cast by an opaque object, especially the area on the earth or moon experiencing the total phase of an eclipse.
penumbra the partially shaded outer region of the shadow cast by an opaque object
tide the alternate rising and falling of the sea, usually twice in each lunar day at a particular place, due to the attraction of the moon and sun.
tidal range The vertical difference between the high tide and the low tide
spring tide A spring tide is a high-amplitude tide occurring when the Earth, Sun, and Moon align (syzygy) during new or full moons.
neap tide a tide just after the first or third quarters of the moon when there is least difference between high and low water

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
