a coma is a state of deep unconsciousness in which a person is unable to be aroused, even by powerful stimulation
what does a person in coma do they do not respond to pain, does not open their eyes, and does not speak
a person in a coma can transition to a persistent vegetative state
PVS persistent vegetative state
persistent vegetative state means the person may have some level of consciousness
what does a person in a persistent vegetative state do may open their eyes, and have some facial movements but these are mostly involuntary reactions and not a response to external stimuli
a minimally conscious state is different from a coma or vegetative state
what does a person do in a minimally conscious state the person exhibits some cognitive behavior and shows sporadic signs of consciousness
what are some examples of cognitive behavior and sporadic signs of consciousness crying or laughing appropriately
Even when people are unconscious they may be able to hear what is going on around them
what have unconscious people have been known to do regain consciousness and relate many of the things they heard while they were unconscious
because unconscious people may be able to hear what is going on around them what should NAs do should limit their discussions to appropriate subjects; they should speak respectfully and explain what they are doing, as they would with any resident
