RP 3 (Part 1- Earth)

Terms, Definitions, Images

TermDefinition
Aquifer An underground layer of rock or soil that holds and transmits groundwater
Atmosphere The layer of gases surrounding Earth held in place by gravity
Axis An imaginary line through Earth's center around which Earth rotates
Climate Long-term patterns of weather in a region; can be affected by natural events and human activity
Convection The movement of fluids (air or water) due to differences in temperature and density
Crust The solid, outermost layer of Earth
Density Current A movement of ocean water caused by differences in water temperature and salinity
Earthquake A sudden shaking of the ground caused by the movement of tectonic plates
Erosion The process by which weathered rock and soil are moved from one place to another
Fossil The preserved remains or trace of an ancient organism
Front A boundary between two air masses with different temperatures and moisture levels
Gravity The force that pulls objects toward each other; governs motion in the solar system
Greenhouse Gas A gas in the atmosphere that traps heat and influences climate
Groundwater Water that flows beneath Earth's surface through soil and rock layers
Hot Spot A stationary plume of hot material in Earth's mantle that creates volcanic activity
Hurricane A tropical cyclone in the Atlantic Ocean or northeastern Pacific Ocean with sustained winds
Hydrosphere All the water on Earth, including oceans, ice, and water vapor
Igneous Rock Rock formed when magma cools and solidifies
Inner Core The solid, innermost layer of Earth composed primarily of iron and nickel
Lithosphere The rigid, outermost layer of Earth consisting of the crust and upper mantle
Local Weather The atmospheric conditions at a specific place and time, influenced by global patterns
Magma Hot, molten rock beneath Earth's surface
Mantle The layer of Earth beneath the crust composed of hot rock
Metamorphic Rock Rock formed when existing rock is changed by heat, pressure, or chemical processes
Mountain Building The process of forming mountain ranges through tectonic plate collisions
Neap Tide A tide with the smallest difference between high and low water; occurs when the Sun and Moon are at right angles
Ocean Current The movement of ocean water in a relatively consistent direction
Outer Core The liquid layer of Earth beneath the mantle composed primarily of iron and nickel
Plate Boundary The edge where two tectonic plates meet
Plate Tectonics The theory that Earth's crust is divided into moving plates that change Earth's surface
Rock Cycle The continuous process by which rocks are formed, broken down, and reformed
Season A period of the year characterized by specific weather patterns caused by Earth's tilted axis
Sedimentary Rock Rock formed from compacted and cemented sediment
Surface Current Ocean water movement driven by wind patterns in the atmosphere
Surface Water Water that flows on Earth's surface, including rivers, streams, lakes, and wetlands
Tectonic Plate A large section of Earth's crust that moves slowly over the mantle
Tide The rise and fall of ocean water caused by the gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun
Topographic Map A map showing Earth's surface features and elevation using contour lines
Tropical Cyclone A rotating storm system with strong winds formed over warm tropical oceans
Typhoon A tropical cyclone in the Indian or western Pacific Ocean with sustained winds
Volcano An opening in Earth's crust where magma, ash, and gases are expelled
Watershed An area of land where all water drains to a common outlet
Weather The atmospheric conditions at a specific place and time
Weathering The breaking down of rock into smaller pieces by physical or chemical processes

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
