| protein molecules | a large, complex macromolecule essential for all living organisms, built from long chains of amino acids linked by peptide bonds |
| structure | the arrangement of and relations between the parts or elements of something complex. |
| gene | a unit of heredity which is transferred from a parent to offspring and is held to determine some characteristic of the offspring. |
| gene version (aka = allele) | a specific form of a gene that provides instructions for making a particular protein molecule |
| mutation | a random change to a gene that sometimes results in a new trait |
| heterozygus | having gene versions that are different |
| homozygous | having gene versions that are the same |
| inherit | to receive genes from a parent |
| sexual reproduction | the process in which two parents pass on their genes to create offspring |

| recessive | the trait it inherited only if the offspring inherits 2 copies of the allele for that trait |
