|---|---|
| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| physical properties | characteristics of matter that can be observed or measured |
| classify | to sort or arrange into groups |
| density | the ability to sink or float in water |
| mass | the amount of matter in an object |
| volume | the amount of space an object takes up |
| conductor | a material that allows energy to flow through |
| insulator | a material that blocks the flow of energy from flowing through |
| solubility (aka soluble) | the ability of a substance to dissolve in another substance |
| solid | particles move slowly and has a definite shape and volume |
| liquid | particles flow past each other and has a definite size but no definite shape |
| gas | particles move quickly and it has no definite volume or shape |
| freezing | process in which a liquid turns into a solid |
| sublimation | a substance goes from a solid to a gas (passing the liquid phase) |
| melting | process in which a solid turns into a liquid |
| boiling | process in which a liquid turns into a gas |

| triple beam balance | a tool that measures mass (in grams) |
| graduated cylinder | a tool that measures volume |
| volume | the amount of space that an object takes up. (measured in mL/Liters) |
| mixture | The combination of 2 or more substances |
| solutions | a special type of mixture in which one substance dissolves in another |
| filter | a tool used to separate a mixture such as sand and water |
| evaporation | a process used to separate a solution |
| magnet | a tool used to separate steel, iron, cobalt, or nickel from other substances (example: from sand) |
| strainer | a tool used to separate large solid objects from smaller solids or liquids |
