Immune Sys
Unit 6 - Immune System
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Antigen | A "marker" on the outside of a cell or virus. Your body uses these like ID cards to tell if a cell belongs to you or if it’s an intruder. |
| Antibody | A Y-shaped protein made by your immune system to grab onto specific antigens and neutralize them. |
| White Blood Cell | The "soldiers" of your blood. There are many types, but their main job is to find and destroy pathogens. |
| B Cell | A type of white blood cell that acts like a factory, pumping out antibodies to fight infections. |
| T Cell | The "special ops" of the immune system. Some hunt down infected cells directly, while others coordinate the entire attack. |
| Memory Cell | These cells "remember" a pathogen after you’ve fought it off once. If that same germ tries to come back, these cells kick-start a massive defense before you even feel sick. |
| Immunity | Your body's ability to resist or fight off a specific disease so you don't get sick from it again. |
| Vaccine | A "practice round" for your immune system. It exposes you to a harmless version of a pathogen so your body can make memory cells without you getting dangerous symptoms. |
| mRNA | A set of instructions (messenger RNA) that tells your cells how to make a specific protein. In some vaccines, it's used to teach your body to recognize a virus. |
| Herd Immunity | When enough people in a group are immune to a disease (through vaccines or past infections) that the germ can't find enough new people to infect, protecting even those who aren't immune. |
| Antibiotic | A medicine used specifically to kill bacteria. (Note |
| Allergy | When your immune system overreacts to something harmless, like pollen or peanuts, treating it like a dangerous invader. |
| Autoimmune | A "glitch" where the immune system gets confused and starts attacking the body's own healthy cells. |
