Solar System Holds the Sun, the planets and all other objects that orbit the Sun. Ours is called "The Milky Way"
Planet a large body in space that orbits a star and does not produce light on its own
Gravity a natural force that pulls two objects toward one another and holds our solar system in place
Moon a natural object that revolves around a planet
Earth 3rd planet from the sun, the only planet in the solar system on which life is known to exist
Asteroid a rocky object that orbits the Sun, found mostly in the region between Mars and Jupiter
Comet a small object in space that orbits a star and is made of ice, dust particles, and frozen gases
Sun Our Solar System's star that is made of hydrogen and helium gases, and supplies the heat and light that sustains life on Earth
Meteor a piece of rock or metal from space that enters Earth's atmosphere
Revolution the movement of an object around another object. The earth does this around the sun every 365.25 days
Rotation An object spins on its axis. The earth does this every 24 hours
Mercury The closest planet to the sun. The smallest planet.
Venus The 2nd planet from the sun. The hottest planet. Known as Earth's sister planet.
Mars The 4th planet from the sun
Jupiter The 5th planet form the sun. The largest planet.
Saturn The 6th planet from the sun. Has the most visible rings made of ice and dust.
Uranus The 7th planet from the sun. Only planet that rotates on its side.
Neptune The farthest planet from the sun
Pluto Largest dwarf planet at the edge of our solar system. Does not have enough mass to have the needed gravity to be a full planet.
Cause of the Tides The gravitational pull of the moon
Cause of the Seasons The tilt of the Earth's axis and the elliptical shape of Earth's orbit
Cause of Day and Night Earth's rotation on its axis
Solar Eclipse Occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Sun and Earth and casts a shadow over part of Earth
Lunar Eclipse Occurs at a full moon when Earth is directly between the moon and the sun
Nicolaus Copernicus A Polish astronomer who first proposed the theory that the sun was the center of the solar system.
Galileo Italian astronomer who improved the telescope to confirm the heliocentric model
Heliocentric Model Sun-centered model of the solar system
Geocentric Model Earth-centered model of the solar system
new moon The phase that occurs when the moon is between the Earth and Sun. 0% of the moon's face is lit.
waxing The term used when the illuminated portion of the moon increases every night. Right side of moon is lit.
full moon The phase that occurs when the Earth is between the moon and Sun. 100% of the moon's face is lit.
waning The term used when the illuminated portion of the moon decreases every night. Left side of moon is lit.
crescent Term that refers to less than half of the Moon's face illuminated
gibbous Term that refers to more than half of the Moon's face illuminated
Month The time period it takes for the moon to go through all of its phases (New moon to New moon). Approximately 27.3 days
Day The time period it takes for Earth to complete one full rotation
Year The time period it takes for Earth to complete one full revolution
