Traditional Notation
Terms for Year 7 Music - Traditional notation
| Term | Definition |

| Notes | Symbols that represent sounds with a definite duration, pitch and/or timbre in Music. |
| Rests | Symbols that represent silences with a definite duration in Music |
| Crotchet | The name given to a ¼ note. A sound that lasts for one count/ beat. Sounds like “cat” |
| Quaver | The name given to an ⅛ note. A sound that lasts for half a count/ beat. Usually drawn in pairs with a beam line between them. Sounds like “monkey” |
| Minim | The name given to a ½ note. A sound that lasts for two beats/ counts. Usually placed at the end of melody to sound like a musical full stop. |
| Stave | Five lines with four spaces where we can place note heads to indicate their pitch and/ or timbre. |
| Treble Clef | A fancy letter G symbol that is drawn on the stave to indicate the notes will be pitched higher than Middle C. |
| Time Signature | Two numbers on top of each other that indicate the cycle of pulses. Usually, 4/4 which is 4x1/4 notes per bar. |
| Bass Clef | A fancy letter F symbol that is drawn on the stave to indicate the notes will be pitched lower than middle C. |
