| Population | a group of individuals of the same species living and interbreeding within a given area. |
| Community | an interacting group of various species in a common location. |
| Ecosystem | a single environment and every living (biotic) organism and non-living (abiotic) factor that is contained within it or characterizes it. |
| Biome | a collection of plants and animals that have common characteristics for the environment they exist in. |
| Biosphere | a narrow zone of the earth where land, water, air interact with each other to support life. It is in this zone that life exists. |
| Abiotic Factors | a nonliving part of an ecosystem that shapes its environment. |
| Biotic Factors | the living parts of an ecosystem. |
| Ecology | the study of how organisms interact with one another and with their physical environment. |
| Predation | one organism kills and consumes another |
| Food Chain | shows what eats what in a particular habitat. It shows the flow of energy and materials from one organism to the next, beginning with a producer . |
| Food Web | is all of the food chains in an ecosystem. |
| Energy Pyramid | a model that shows the flow of energy from one trophic, or feeding, level to the next in an ecosystem. |
| Herbivore | are animals whose primary food source is plant-based. |
| Carnivore | an animal that eats meat |
| Omnivore | an organism that regularly consumes a variety of material, including plants, animals, algae, and fungi. |
| Producer/Autotroph | Producers are any kind of green plant. Green plants make their food by taking sunlight and using the energy to make sugar. |
| Consumer/ Heterotroph | are living creatures that eat organisms from a different population. |
| Decomposer/ Detritivore | an organism that decomposes, or breaks down, organic material such as the remains of dead organisms. |
| Primary Consumer | An animal that eats plants |
| Secondary Consumer | An animal that eats primary consumers |
| Tertiary Consumer | An animal that eats secondary consumers |
| Primary Succession | the process of life establishing itself for the first time in a lifeless area that lacks soil |
| Secondary Succession | Life coming back to an area after a disaster (like a fire or flood) |
| Climax Community | A stable group of living things that forms after an ecosystem finishes changing |
| Pioneer Species | the first living things to grow in a new place |
| Keystone Species | the variety of all living things on Earth and how they fit together |
| Biodiversity | the variety of all living things on Earth and how they fit together |
| Limiting Factor | any resource or environmental condition that restricts the growth, abundance, or distribution of a population within an ecosystem |
| Carrying Capacity | Carrying capacity is the biggest population an environment can support. |
| Exponential Growth | Exponential growth means a population grows faster and faster because nothing is limiting it. |
| Logistic Growth | Logistic growth means fast growth at first, then slower growth until it stops because of limits |
