| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| DNA | a type of molecule that genes and chromosomes are made of |
| feature | a characteristic that all members of a species have |
| function | how something works |
| gene | an instruction for making a protein molecule |
| gene version aka allele | a specific form of a gene that provides instructions for making a particular protein molecule. |
| heterozygous | having gene versions that are different |
| homozygous | having gene versions that are the same |
| inherit | to receive genes from a parent |
| mutation | a random change to a gene that sometimes results in a new trait |
| protein molecule | a type of large molecule that performs important functions inside organisms |
| sexual reproduction | the process in which two parents pass on their genes to create offspring |
| structure | the way something is shaped or constructed |
| trait | a specific characteristic that all members of a species have |
| variation | any difference in traits between individual organisms |
| dominant | the trait is inherited only as long as the offspring receives at least one copy of the allele for that trait (Represented with capital letters) |
| recessive | the trait is inherited only if the offspring inherits 2 copies of the allele for that trait (Represented with lowercase letters) |
| asexual reporduction | the process in which only one parent passes of its genetic information to create offspring=cloning. |
| chromosome | a long piece of DNA that contains many genes |
