| Trait | A specific characteristic of an individual organism |
| Variation | Any difference in traits between individual organisms |
| Function | How something works |
| Protein Molecule | A large molecule performing important functions inside organisms |
| Structure | The way something is built |
| Gene | An instruction for making a protein molecule |
| Allele (Gene Version) | A specific gene providing instruction for making a particular protein molecule |
| Mutation | A random change to a gene that provides instructions for making a particular protein molecule |
| Heterozygous | Have gene versions that are different |
| Homozygous | Have gene versions that are the same |
| Inherit | Receive genes from a parent |
| Sexual Reproduction | Two parents pass on their genes to each other to create offspring |
| Asexual Reproduction | One parent passes on their genetic info to create an offspring |
| Recessive | The trait is only inherited if the offspring inherits two copies of allele for that trait |
| Dominant | The trait is inherited as long as the offspring recieves at least one copy of the allele for that trait |
| Chromosome | Long piece of DNA that contains many genes |
| DNA | a type of molecule that genes and chromosomes are made of. |
