Sun Our Solar System's star that is made of hydrogen and helium gases, and supplies the heat and light that sustains life on Earth
Mercury The closest planet to the sun. The smallest planet.
Venus The 2nd planet from the sun. The hottest planet. Known as Earth's sister planet.
Earth 3rd planet from the sun, the only planet in the solar system on which life is known to exist
Mars The 4th planet from the sun. Known as the Red Planet.
Jupiter The 5th planet form the sun. The largest planet.
Saturn The 6th planet from the sun. Has the most visible rings made of ice and dust.
Uranus The 7th planet from the sun. Only planet that rotates on its side.
Neptune The farthest planet from the sun. The coldest planet
Inner Planets Characteristics Terrestrial rocky surfaces, high temperatures, close to the sun, close to each other
Outer Planets Characteristics Gaseous surface, large in size, further apart, have rings
Inner Planet Names Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars
Outer Planet Names Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
Sputnik First Satellite sent into orbit around the Earth, launched by the Soviet Union
Explorer 1 The first US. Satellite launched into orbit in 1958
Yuri Gagarin Soviet astronaut who was the first human in Space
Alan Shepard American astronaut who was the first American to travel into space in 1961 aboard Freedom 7
