Ecology
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Abiotic factor | physical, or nonliving, factor that shapes an ecosystem |
| Biodiversity | the total of the variety of organisms in the biosphere; also called biological diversity |
| Biomass | total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level |
| Biome | a group of ecosystems that share similar climates and typical organisms |
| Biosphere | part of Earth in which life exists including land, water, and air or atmosphere |
| Biotic factor | any living part of the environment with which an organism might interact |
| Carnivore | an organism, typically an animal, that primarily or exclusively eats meat or animal tissue. They play a crucial role in food webs by regulating populations of prey animals and maintaining ecosystem balance. |
| Community | assemblage of different populations that live together in a defined area |
| Consumer | organism that relies on other organisms for its energy and food supply; also called a heterotroph |
| Decomposer | organisms that break down dead organisms and release the nutrients from the dead matter into the environment around them. |
| Ecological pyramids | model that illustrates the flow of energy, biomass, or numbers at each trophic level in an environment |
| Ecology | Scientific study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment |
| Ecosystem | all the organisms that live in a place, together with their nonliving environment |
| Food chain | a series of steps in an ecosystem in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten |
| Food web | network of complex interactions formed by the feeding relationships among the various organisms in an ecosystem |
| Habitat | area where an organism lives including the biotic and abiotic factors that affect it |
| Herbivore | an animal that primarily eats plants or plant-based materials for energy and nutrients, playing a crucial role in ecosystems by transferring energy from producers to higher trophic levels. |
| Niche | the role an organism plays in its environment: includes habitat |
| Omnivore | an organism, typically an animal, that regularly consumes both plant and animal matter for nutrition. They play a crucial role in ecosystems, as they can occupy multiple trophic levels in food chains. |
| Organism | any living thing, a self-contained individual that can grow, metabolize, and reproduce, ranging from single-celled bacteria to complex multicellular animals and plants. |
| Primary productivity | the total amount of matter made by producers within an ecosystem |
| Population | group of individuals of the same species that live in the same area |
| Producer | also known as an autotroph, is an organism that creates its own food from inorganic substances, typically through photosynthesis or chemosynthesis, forming the base of a food chain. |
| Trophic level | each step in a food chain or food web |
