All Organelles
Plant and Animal Organelles
| Structure | Function |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | Holds the cell's DNA, which is used to make copies of the cell and provide instructions for ribosomes to make proteins. |
| Ribosomes | Use instructions from parts of DNA in order to create proteins from amino acids. |
| Mitochondria | Breaks down sugars to produce energy in a process called cellular respiration. |
| Vacuole | Stores food, nutrients, enzymes, and wastes. In plant cells a single large vacuole helps provide structure. |
| Cell Membrane | Creates a boundary between the inside and outside of the cell, and controls what can enter and leave the cell. |
| Cytoplasm | A jelly like substance that fills the inside of the cell. It contains chemicals and nutrients the cell needs to function. |
| Cell Wall | Only found in plant cells, some fungi, and some bacteria. It provides structure for organisms that do not have a skeleton. |
| Chloroplast | Produces sugars using sunlight in a process called photosynthesis. |
