Plant and Animal Organelles

StructureFunction
Nucleus Holds the cell's DNA, which is used to make copies of the cell and provide instructions for ribosomes to make proteins.
Ribosomes Use instructions from parts of DNA in order to create proteins from amino acids.
Mitochondria Breaks down sugars to produce energy in a process called cellular respiration.
Vacuole Stores food, nutrients, enzymes, and wastes. In plant cells a single large vacuole helps provide structure.
Cell Membrane Creates a boundary between the inside and outside of the cell, and controls what can enter and leave the cell.
Cytoplasm A jelly like substance that fills the inside of the cell. It contains chemicals and nutrients the cell needs to function.
Cell Wall Only found in plant cells, some fungi, and some bacteria. It provides structure for organisms that do not have a skeleton.
Chloroplast Produces sugars using sunlight in a process called photosynthesis.
