Scientific Method

| data | information |
| dependent variable | the variable being measured in an investigation. The variable that DOES NOT change. |
| evidence | information that supports or disproves a claim |
| fair test | an investigation where only one variable changes and all other factors are controlled (don't change) |
| hypothesis | a prediction based on background knowledge and research. It is usually stated in an if then statement. |
| independent variable | the variable CHANGED by a scientist in an investigation. The thing a scientist is testing. |
| observation | information that is collected with the senses |
| problem/question | a question raised for inquiry, need, or improvement |
| conclusion | final statement that communicates the results of an investigation based on the hypothesis |
| variable | factors in an experimental investigation that are controlled, changed, observed, or measured |
| experiment | series of steps developed to test a hypothesis |
| constant/controlled variable | any factor that a scientist keeps the same (constant) throughout an experiment. |
| procedure | a detailed, step-by-step list of instructions for how to conduct a science experiment |
| analyze | break into parts and study close for better understanding |
