Bridges

Bridge Building Vocab

TermDefinition
Abutment The supports where a bridge arch meets the ground. Resist outward motion. Keep bridge up.
Arch bridge A bridge that has compression spread over the arch. Half cirlce.
Cantilever A type of bridge in which a beam is capable of supporting a load on 1 end when the other end is anchored.
Dynamic Load Load/weight that is always changing
Static Load A load that doesn't change or changes slowly
Dead Load The weight or load of a structure itself. ex. a Bridge, a chair
Load weight, mass or force on a structure
Pier A structure that extends from a bridge to the ground to support the bridge. "feet"
Reinforced concrete Concrete with steel or plastic rods inside them to resist tension
Shear A sliding/separating force
Compression Pushing/Squeezing force
Tension Pulling/stretching force
Torsion Twisting force
Strut A rigid structure member that is in compression
Suspension Bridge A bridge that has a deck suspended (hung) from cables that go over a tower
Truss Bridge A structural part - series of triangles.
Beam Bridge A bridge composed of a horizontal beam and piers
