| feature | a characteristic that all members of a species have |
| trait | a specific characteristic of an individual organism |
| variation | any difference in traits between individual organisms |
| function | how much something works |
| protien molecules | a type of large molecule that performs important functions inside an organism |
| structure | the way something is shaped or constructed |
| gene | an instruction for making aa protein molecule |
| gene version (aka= Allele) | a specific form of a gene that provides instructions for making a particular protein molecule |
| mutation | a randome change to a gene that ssometimes results in a new trait |
| heterozyous | having gene versions that are different |
| homozygous | having gene versions that are the same |
| inherit | to recive genes from a parent |
| sexual reproduction | the process in which two parents pass on their genes to create an offspring |
| asexual reproduction | the process in which only one parent passes on its genetic information to create an offspring= cloning |
| recessive | the trait inherited only if the offspring inherits 2 copies of the allele for that trait (represented by lowecase letters) |
| dominant | the trait is inherited as long as the offspring recieves at least one copy of the allele for thaat trait (represented with capital letters) |
| chromosones | a long peice of DNA that contains many genes |
| DNA | a type of molecule that genes and chromosones are made of |
