Atmosphere sensing

Remote Sensing of the Atmoshpere

TermDefinition
In-Situ Observations The ability to study objects with direct physical contact, using instruments that 'senses' within its medium.
Remote Sensing The ability to study objects without direct physical contact.
The Global Positioning System (GPS): Is a network of satellites, ground stations, and GPS receivers/devices with signals that determine precise geographic location and movement.
The Geographic Information System (GIS): Is a large, powerful database that allows users to acquire, organize, store, and analyze information about the physical and cultural environments.
Geostationary Satellites: Are satellites that are above 35,785 km (22,236 m) above the Equator, completing an orbit every 24 hours, synchronizing with Earth's rotation. (Hence, "geostationary").
Polar Orbiting Satellites: Are satellites that are above 850 km (500 m) that move from north to south, pole to pole. Completing 14 orbits every 24 hours, and provides a high-resolution data.
Clouds by elevation: Consist of high (20,000 alt), middle (10,000 alt), and low (6,000 alt) level cloud type.
Clouds of vertical development: Are clouds that cannot be classified in any level of cloud type because it can occupy more altitude than one of the above three level cloud type.
