Leaf Structure
This will help you remember the structures of a leaf and their functions.
| Structure | Function |
|---|---|
| Cuticle | A waxy layer that prevents water loss through evaporation |
| Upper Epidermis | The upper outer layer that has tough, irregularly shaped cells with thick outer walls that resist tearing and serves as protection |
| Palisade Mesophyll | A layer of cells containing closely-packed cells that absorb light that enters the leaf |
| Spongy Mesophyll | A loose tissue that has many air spaces, which exchange gas with the exterior |
| Xylem | Tissue that distributes water from the roots throughout the plant |
| Phloem | Tissue that distributes nutrients and carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis throughout the plant |
| Lower Epidermis | The lower outer layer that has tough, irregularly shaped cells with thick outer walls that resist tearing and serves as protection with abundant stomata |
| Stoma | Small opening in the lower epidermis that allows carbon dioxide, oxygen, and water to diffuse in and out of the leaf, and prevents water loss |
| Guard Cells | Highly specialized cells that surround and control the opening & closing of the stomata, and regulate gas (especially carbon dioxide and water) exchange |
