Meiosis & adaptation
Unit 1&2 VCE Biology
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| behavioural adaptation | type of adaptation where the actions of an organism change, helping it to survive in its environment |
| mutualism | symbiotic relationship where both organisms benefit |
| crossing over | the exchange of chromosomal material between non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes during prophase I of meiosis |
| haploid number | having one set of chromosomes (n), occurs in all gametes |
| structural adaptation | type of adaptation where the physical features of an organism change, helping it to survive in its environment |
| commensalism | symbiotic relationship where one organism benefits and the other organism is not affected |
| nondisjunction | failure of sister chromatids or homologous chromosomes to separate properly during meiosis |
| independent assortment | random arrangement of maternal and paternal copies of homologous chromosomes during metaphase I |
| somatic cell | every cell in an organism except gametes, always diploid |
| physiological adaptation | type of adaptation where the internal/cellular features of an organism change, helping it to survive in its environment |
| diploid number | having two sets of chromosomes (2n), occurs in all somatic cells |
| gametes | haploid cell capable of fusing with another haploid cell to form a zygote |
| homologous pair | matching pair (of chromosomes) |
| parasitism | symbiotic relationship where one organism benefits and the other organism is harmed |
| random fertilisation | method of increasing genetic variation where it is by chance that a particular sperm fertilises a particular egg |
| meiosis | type of cell division in eukaryotic cells, produces 4 genetically different haploid daughter cells from 1 diploid parent cell |
| asexual reproduction | reproduction involving only one parent, offspring are genetically identical to the parent |
| genetic variation | difference in DNA sequences between individuals within a population |
| sexual reproduction | reproduction involving two parents, offspring are genetically different to the parents |
