What system contains tissues and organs that are involved in the removal of wastes? Excretory system
What four systems are involved with the excretory system? Urinary, respiratory, digestive, skin
How is the respiratory system involved with excretion? It removes carbon dioxide and water (as vapor)
What does the urinary system do? Eliminates water, salt, and bile as urine from the body
How does the digestive system play a role in excretion? Eliminate water, some salts, and bile, in addition to indigestible material
What is the terms that means the removal of liquid wastes? Excretion
What does the skin do? Excretes small amounts of nitrogenous wastes, water, and salt all in the form of perspiration
What are the kidneys responsible for? Excretes wastes from the blood, balances fluid in the body, and forms urine
Where are the kidneys located? the back wall of the abdominal cavity
What is the functional unit of the kidneys? the nephron (a microscopic coiled set of tubes with a tiny capillary filled bulb at one end)
What is the breaking down of proteins to form urea? deamination
What type of wastes are formed during the breakdown of protein? nitrogenous wastes
What is the liquid waste that contains urea? urine
What should not be in your urine? glucose, blood
What is having sugar in the blood called? glycosuria
What is it called if you have blood in your urine? hematuria
What is the purpose of urinalysis? It helps doctors to detect disease
What kidney disorder does one have if they have excess calcium salts or uric acid in urine? kidney stones
What is the cup shaped part of the nephron that filters blood? Bowman capsule
Where is urea formed? Liver
Where is urea filtered? kidneys
