NGSS Climate Exam

QuestionAnswer
CO2 Greenhouse Gas that humans release by burning fossil fuels
Carbon Cycle The continuous movement of carbon atoms from the atmosphere into organisms and the Earth, and then back into the atmosphere.
Greenhouse Effect The process where certain gases in the atmosphere trap heat near Earth's surface, keeping the planet warm enough to support life.
Condensation The process where water vapor (gas) cools down and changes back into liquid water droplets. (this creates clouds)
Clouds Visible masses of tiny water droplets or ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere, formed by the process of condensation.
Planetary Winds Large-scale wind patterns (like the Trade Winds) that blow consistently in the same direction across the entire globe, distributed by Earth's rotation.
Albedo A measure of how much light hits a surface and is reflected back without being absorbed. Ice has high albedo (reflects a lot), while dark pavement has low albedo (absorbs a lot).
Rising Air Air that moves upward because it is warmer or less dense than the surrounding air; as it rises, it cools and often leads to cloud formation.
Fossil Fuels Natural fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas formed over millions of years from the remains of living organisms.
Climate The long-term pattern of weather in a specific area over many years (usually 30+), rather than just what happens today.
