waves vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| mechanical wave | A wave that requires a medium to travel through; Examples are sound, water, and seismic |
| wave | any disturbance that transmits energy through matter and space |
| medium | something through which a wave travels; a solid, liquid, gas, or space |
| longitudinal wave | A wave in which the particles of the medium vibrate in the same direction as (parallel to) the direction that the wave is traveling *think slinky, sound, UV, tsunami |
| transverse wave | A wave where the particles of the medium vibrate in the opposite direction (perpendicular to) the direction that the waves is traveling *think stadium wave/up an down |
| electromagnetic wave | a wave that can travel through the vacuum of space-does not require a medium but can go through one |
| electromagnetic spectrum | the spectrum of waves that include UV (ultraviolet), infrared, x-rays, visible light, gamma, microwaves, radio waves |
| crest | The highest point of a wave |
| trough | The lowest point of a wave |
| compression | the part of a longitudinal wave where the particles of the medium are crowded together |
| rarefaction | the part of a longitudinal wave where the particles of the medium are further apart |
| amplitude | The distance from the resting point of the medium to the crest or from the resting point of the medium to the trough |
| wavelength | The distance from crest to crest or trough to trough in a transverse wave; the distance from compression to compression or rarefraction to rarefraction on a longitudinal wave |
| frequency | The number of waves (crests) that pass by point in certain amount of time |
| hertz | the unit of measurement (Hz) for frequency |
| wave speed | The speed or (or velocity, v) of a wave |
